Hindus, and to some degree Muslims too, divided in social strata with Brahmins at the top among Hindus. Most of people robbed of their property, self-esteem, and intelligence, by the ruling class, and the clergy.
Complete failure of justice system. A government official had the "right" to take away anything he liked, including the wives of weaker men. The law of "might is right" prevailed. The Hindu clergy had woven such a net of rituals for every occasion, that there was no escape from that for a common man. Every ritual cost a lot of money, but rituals must be performed at all costs.
Only the upper two classes had the right to education, the third class, comprising of about 60% of the population had only a limited right to education, while the fourth class - the so called service class - had no right to education, or to attend religious services.
The Muslim clergy, at the level of "Qazi", were also the judges. Their judgment was final.
