Guru Nanak observed that the whole humanity was suffering from injustice, ignorance, lack of self-esteem, and lack of Divine Knowledge, so he left home at the age of 32 or so, and undertook four long journeys to educate the masses, and fight against oppression. These journeys lasted for about 23 years and he covered more than 40000 Km of distance, mainly by foot. He had to suffer many hardships on the way including lack of food and water, transportation, lack of good rest, and many times, lack of safety. Walking through jungles, uninhabited places, and with no place to sleep, he came face to face with death many times. But he had a mission to accomplish - to alleviate the suffering of humanity, and to spread the Word of God. In his first Journey, he traveled through Eastern, Southern, and Western India, and through Bangla Desh, Burma and Sri Lanka. In his second journey, he traveled through Himalayas to reach Kashmir, parts of Tibet, China, and Southern Russia. On his third Journey, he took a small ship to reach Mecca. But he covered his return journey on foot travelling through Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. There are still signs of events that testify to his visit to those places, and the love and the respect that the locals developed for this great soul, who undertook all the suffering to reduce their sufferings. His fourth journey was within India, and was not too long.
