Khushwant singh For Punjab Ratan

Chandigarh - Punjab Govt. would conferred Punjab Rattan award to Eminent author and media personality, Khushwant Singh at a gala function to be organised at Hotel Imperial in New Delhi on August 31. The award is in recognition to the contribution made by the distinguished author in the field of literature and journalism, a gover nment spokesman revealed here on Friday. The state government is planning to make it into a ‘‘subc o n t i n e n t a l event’’ of sorts by inviting eminent personalities from across the border as well.    The Punjab CM had written to Khushwant Singh conveying him the government’s intention of conferring this award to the ‘‘eminent son of Punjab, whose fame transcends boundaries.’’    Khushwant wrote back conveying his acceptance, following which the programme has been organised at Delhi. ‘‘We would have organised the function in Punjab, however, the author’s health does not allow him to undertake travel. Moreover, Delhi would also be convenient for the guest expected to arrive from Pakistan and other countries,’’ a senior government official revealed.    This would be second ‘Punjab Rattan’ award to be bestowed on an eminent Punjab personality. Last month, film maker, Yash Chopra was presented this award by the government at a function in Chandigarh.
