Sikh Sports Club was started six years ago as an initiative to understand whether there was a need for sports activities in the South Asian community. The Club started with just 50 participants and has grown to an outstanding 900 youths registered in 2006. A great achievement for the parents, volunteers of the sport club.
Sikh Sports Club provides the following services:
• Soccer tournaments and practices for youth and adults. With separate teams for girls and boys.
• Bhangra (South Asian dancing) classes for interested youth, free of charge.
• Tutoring for youth that need extra help with their homework or classes. This ensures that school is not sacrificed due to participation in our sports activities. It also encourages education above all.
• Annual Picnics for all Club participants and their families, free of charge.
• Annual awards ceremonies to recognize player achievements, Free of Charge.
• Free coaching licenses for the interested volunteers
• Free referee licenses for the interested volunteers
• Free Yoga Classes for Women Only (Every Monday Eve. 6PM-8PM)
Overall, the Club realizes the importance of community involvement and holds food drives as well as blood drives. This allows youth to understand the importance of giving back to the community.
As the South Asian community grows and integrates into the Canadian lifestyle they are increasingly realizing the importance of youth involvement in Sports. Many parents and older students are also realizing the importance of either volunteering or being actively involved in their children’s lives. For this reason we have over 70 volunteers who devote their time to helping us run and provide these services to youth. We realize that not every parent has the resources to enroll their children in sports teams therefore we register some children for free and provide them with the essential uniforms and equipment. Had it not been our volunteers we would not provide such a valuable service to our community.
Sikh Sports Club registration is open to eligible applicants regardless of age, race, color, religion. If you would like to register please visit our website at www.sikhsportsclub.com we are also looking for sponsor and volunteer for our club. Sat Siri Akal,
We are starting a sports programme, here in Slough, UK. The Gurudawara will be the platform for our project. I will keep you posted. I was wondering if we could use your web-site as an information channel until we get up and running. This will be a period of twelve months. I will also contribute to your sports pages.
