State Animal and Bird Of Punjab

Punjab feels pride in having Black Buck as its state animal and Eastern Goshawk as its state bird. Black Buck is also known as “Kala Hiran” in the local language. Eastern Goshhawk is called “Baaz” in punjab’s local language.

“Black Buck” is a species of antelope found mainly in India and is blessed with a striking color and spiraled horns and looks beautiful. The fawn’s coat turns black at maturity from yellowish color. It is found in the plains and avid forests and hilly tracks. Black Buck likes to be in herds of 20-30, larger herds may consist of several hundreds. It has a keen eye sight and speed and responds to alarm call by leaps and bounds.

On the open plain, the Blackbuck is one of the fastest animals and can outrun most predators over long distances. Its chief predator was the now extinct Indian Cheetah. It is now sometimes preyed upon by wolves, feral dogs, etc

The Goshawk is the largest member of the genus Accipiter. It is a raptor with short broad wings and a long tail, both adaptations to manoeuvring through trees in the forests it lives and nests in. The male is blue-grey above and barred grey below, 49–57 cm (19–22 in) long with a 93–105 cm (37–41 in) wingspan. The female is much larger, 58–64 cm (23–25 in) long with a 108–127 cm (43–50 in) wingspan, slate-grey above and grey below. Males of the smaller races can weigh as little as 630 grams (22 oz), whereas females of the larger races can weigh as much as 2 kg (4.4 lb). The juvenile is brown above and barred brown below. The flight is a characteristic “five slow flaps – straight glide”.
