Surjit Bindrakhia
Surjit Bindrakhia had arguably the most powerful voice among Bhangra singers during his time. Throaty, with a range that never fails to astound, he was possibly the most successful traditional artist doing the rounds of the bhangra scene during his time. Surjit had been known in Punjab for many years, but his big break in the expatriate market came with Dupatta Tera Sat Rang Da a track that can only be called explosive. Since then there have been remixes of his older songs and a few new releases.
Bindrakhia was a traditional bhangra singer, and since most of his work has been produced in India, it may at first appear unpolished. Certainly the music is more “rustic” than that found on many bhangra bands from the UK, but it that does nothing to reduce its impact. There are more sustained dhol beats in Bindrakhia’s work than you would find elsewhere (actually Atul Sharma does the music on all his albums) and the style is traditional. There is no room for tiny motions when dancing to Bindrakhia, the beats demand large gestures and uninhibited movement. A note must be made of the high tone Bindrakhia sometimes uses, which sounds like a screech. You can find others trying such vocal pryotechnics, but few can pull it off as Bindrakhia does. His singing style works with the beat, so you will find him pausing along with the dhol and raising and shifting into different keys as the dhol does.
All of this gives Bindrakhia the air of a child gone a little mad with his voice. Certainly he isn’t serious, except in small doses, most of the songs are very light and fit in with his job (as he sees it) to entertain. He’s exactly what the singers at the “mela” would be. He’s exactly the sort of singer I would expect to entertain at a country fair

Surjit Bindrakhia was a amazing singer ,, he is known as king of dj’s and he reminds me of someone who can sing and get the crowd on their feet. His singing style is used by singers like my self, and other new singers. I was really shocked to hear that he past away and i was not beliving this. RIP SURJIT BINDRAKHIA ..

the man was indeed a one off….. the voice, the personality, the charisma, the cheer joy of watching him perform was breathing taking ……. i was fortunate enough to have him peform live (no CDs) at my wedding ….. the MAN was incredible …. even now one gets goosebumps listening to his incredible voice & music…… its a great shame his life was cut so so short, its real tragic

A great singer, one of the most polite person in the music business and an excellent friend.I have known Surjit from his college days @ Ropar, when we used to go to his Bindrakh Nights. Had opportunity to be his neibour for few years @ Zail Singh Nagar Ropar and found him a very soft spoken and respectable. Impossible to replace him in the world of music.A legend I would I would say.

Surjit Bindrakhia is my favorite singer. When he was student he used to go to city to buy a Toombi and started singing “Sat Gur Nanak Teri Lila Niari Ee”. It is a favorite song of Yamla Jatt who is the pioneer of Punjabi lok Geet. We are proud of Surjit. Will be remebered for ever.

Bindrakhia uncle was a great friend of my dads. They where friends since they where little kids. They where also in a band or a bhangra group together back in Roper, Punjab. My dad did bhnagra and He sang. When i found out that Bindrakhia uncle died, i cried, my dad cried, and my mom cried. my grandpa went to the funaral cuz he was in india that time. anywaz all i wanna say is i miss u and NOBODY can ever forget you. you too good. but u gave your voice to your brother-in-law before you left…..listen to his brother in law…..he sounds like him.

i belong to tamilandu and can not even speak punjabi . only can understand.
but when i heard the song tera yaar boldaa i became great fan of him. after hearing that he is no more at the age of 41 , i was shocked . really his voice is mesmerising and joyful.
main kal tak nahin rehna is also a real time song of his own.
by hearing that song, i could not control my tears.
